Women's Cricket coming to Bish

£3,500 funding boost for women and girls cricket at Bishopthorpe Cricket Club Bishopthorpe Cricket Club is delighted to announce that it has received £3,500 in funding to support the development of women and girls cricket in 2027. The funding is supported by David Skaith, Mayor of York and North Yorkshire and the York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority, delivered through North Yorkshire Sport’s Movement, Activity and Sport Fund. The £3,500 investment will enable Bishopthorpe Cricket Club to establish and grow a sustainable cricket programme for women and girls, building on the interest already generated through softball cricket taster sessions and engagement with local Rainbows and Brownies groups. The funding will help provide age and ability appropriate equipment and create welcoming opportunities for girls and women who may be completely new to cricket or who have previously lacked the confidence or opportunity to take part. The programme will include opportunities for both junior and adult players, with an emphasis on making cricket accessible, enjoyable and sociable. It will also support the club’s wider ambition of increasing female participation, developing volunteers and making women’s and girls’ cricket a more visible part of life at Bishopthorpe Cricket Club. Lisa Thornton, Chair of Bishopthorpe Cricket Club, said: “This is fantastic news for Bishopthorpe Cricket Club and for women and girls throughout our local community. “The funding gives us a real opportunity to build on the interest we have already seen and create something sustainable at the club. “We want Bishopthorpe Cricket Club to be somewhere that girls and women can come along, perhaps pick up a bat or ball for the very first time, and immediately feel welcome and part of the club. “This investment will allow us to provide the latest equipment and opportunities we need to start developing a strong women and girls section during 2027, which we hope will continue to grow for many years to come.” Further details about the club’s 2027 women and girls programme and upcoming opportunities to get involved will be announced ahead of the new season.
