Bishopthorpe won by 47 runs
In the first round of the Wilberfoss Cup, Bishopthorpe CC XI secured a convincing 47-run victory over Colton Institute CC 2nd XI after defending a competitive total of 138/5 in their 20 overs.
After being put into bat, Bishopthorpe made a strong start accelerating from the very first ball. Mike Dale provided the early momentum with a powerful 29 from 20 balls, including four sixes, while David Turner added a quick fire 15 at the top of the order.
Ben Smith anchored the innings superbly, finishing unbeaten on 43 from 34 deliveries with three fours and two sixes to guide the hosts to a strong total.
Support came from Shub Karmakar (13) and Jamie Blackburn, who remained not out on 15 as Bishopthorpe closed on 138/5 from their 20 overs.
Colton Institute’s chase never fully gathered momentum despite a determined effort from Byrne, who top scored with 20 from 31 balls. Wilson briefly threatened to swing the game with an explosive 20 from just 12 deliveries, but regular wickets prevented any sustained partnership from developing.
Bishopthorpe’s bowling attack shared the wickets with Blackburn taking 2 and Rob Balding claiming three wickets in his 4 overs to keep Colton under pressure throughout the chase.
Colton eventually finished on 91/8 from their 20 overs, leaving Bishopthorpe to celebrate a well-earned 47-run win.
The draw for the second round will see Bish travel to old adversaries Ovington later in the month.
